It’s looking up at the darkening sky
Burnt neon at the edges;
A glowing crystal moon
And one bright planet
Shimmering in the twilight

The echo of footsteps under a bridge
Avoiding the cars that pass above
Zooming by
Unaware of their surroundings

Trees silhouetted
Black branches straining up
Reaching for something
Unattainable

Like now
There is no finish line
No end
Just the continual journey
Perpetual drive
To go, move, push

Steady breaths
The even beat
Of your own song;
Not wanting it to stop

Others passing by
Smiling or nodding
A quick hello;
You’re part of something bigger
Alone
But always connected

Finally you turn
Reluctantly
Retracing your steps
Heading back towards reality

It’s almost time
You’re nearly there
But you smile
As the breeze blows
Trying to hold you back

Because it’s also
Going faster at the end
Just because you can

That extra thrill
Burning, aching
Filling you up
And overflowing
Telling you
You did it
You won

And it’s that feeling
Of knowing, defeating
That brings you back
Again and again.
